Project 101

Dan attempts to watch 101 movies in 12 months

About The Project

I normally hate doing the whole “new years resolution” thing, so I’m not going to call it that, but just instead refer to it as my project for over the next year.

My goal, is to watch 101 movies next year. No wait, let me clarify, 101 movies that I haven’t seen before. It’s not my 101 favourite movies ever, or I’m not really going off any real official list or order, simply 101 movies that I’ve not seen that I either have always intended on seeing but never got around to it, or it’s a movie that I would never usually think of watching.

I used to pride myself on being quite the movie buff, but in the last few years, I’ve been slipping. I used to go through more movies than hot dinners a few years back, but something happened, and I’ve just slowed right now to the point that I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie that I hadn’t already watched 100 times before.

So, I plan on fixing that.

In the next 12 months, I’m going to watch 101 movies that I haven’t seen before. Some of them may be brand new ones at the cinema (although I hope not too many, it’s fucking pricey going to the cinema these days!), and others – which is where this idea started – was that there’s a bunch of really great iconic movies that I’m quite embarrassed to admit that I’ve never seen (as you’ll see as I progress through my list).

There’s actually a shitload of movies sitting around my house that I’ve either bought or downloaded and just not gotten around to watching. Plus there’s always the local Video Ezy down the road from my place, as well as some friends of mine with fairly impressive dvd collections that I might have to raid.

I put 101 because that’s about 2 a week, which seems quite a lot for someone who loves going out socialising as well as working a 40 hour week in a fairly high-stress job, but there are times where I’ve been sick, or just too lazy/stoned to leave the house, so I might watch a bunch of movies in one sitting.

So the only rules I have is that they must be movies that I’ve never seen before, and they can’t be short films – that’s cheating, I’m talking full length feature films. Doco’s are okay too, provided they’re intended as full-features and not those 1 hour ‘made for tv’ specials. Oh, and I have to watch it from start to finish – so if I really can’t stand the movie, and I have to turn it off half way through, it doesn’t count (If there’s any that I simply can’t stand, I’ll still write about them though).

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve not worked in the industry before and this isn’t some weird marketing experiment, and nor, as I’m sure you’ll work out as I go along, I’m not a writer. I’m not doing this in some vein attempt that someone will give me a job reviewing stuff (although I guess that’d be kinda cool). I’m just a guy who likes watching movies.

Wish me luck!
